What grayscale conversion actually does
Converting to grayscale maps every pixel's color to a single brightness value, producing a neutral image with no color cast — useful for documents, prints, scans, or any case where color isn't the point. It's a distinct starting point from a photographic black-and-white look, which typically also adjusts contrast, tone, and grain on top of removing color.

What's the difference between grayscale and black and white?
Grayscale usually means a neutral conversion with no color, keeping the full range of tones. 'Black and white' often implies a further photographic treatment — more contrast, added grain, a vignette — built on top of that grayscale base. noir.photos supports both: a plain grayscale conversion here, or the fuller preset and adjustment tools elsewhere on the site.
Will converting to grayscale reduce my image quality or resolution?
No resizing happens as part of the conversion. When exporting to JPG or WebP you can preview the quality setting before downloading; PNG export is lossless, so quality doesn't apply there.
