Instead of a neutral gray scale, Duotone remaps a photo's full tonal range between a deep near-black and a warm paper white — the same idea behind a printed duotone plate, not a plain grayscale conversion. Highlights, midtones and shadows all still exist; they're just recolored toward this one pair.

A warm pairing instead of neutral gray
Every other look on this site keeps tones neutral; Duotone is the one deliberate exception. The preset takes the existing tonal values in a photo and eases them along a curve toward two anchor colors — a deep, slightly cool near-black and a warm, paper-like white — so the image reads as a printed plate rather than a photographic grayscale conversion.
Shape the balance before the remap
Exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows all run before the duotone step, so they still do real work: pushing contrast up or exposure down shifts more of the image toward the black end before the two-tone remap is applied, and pulling back does the opposite. It's the same set of sliders as every other look here, used to steer where a photo lands between its two anchor tones.

Frequently asked questions
Is Duotone the same as a regular black-and-white conversion?
No. A regular conversion keeps tones neutral gray. Duotone remaps the same tonal range onto a near-black and a warm paper white instead, which reads closer to a printed plate than a photograph.
Can I choose a different pair of colors instead of black and paper white?
Not currently — Duotone always maps to this one pair. Exposure and contrast still let you shape how much of the image leans toward each end.
Which export format should I use for a poster or print-style image?
PNG reproduces the flat tones cleanly without compression artifacts, which suits a graphic, print-style result. JPG and WebP are also available if file size matters more than that.
Can I apply the same duotone treatment to several images at once?
